Department of French and Italian
Massimo Scalabrini, a professor of Italian and chair of the Department of French and Italian at IU Bloomington, was trained in Italy and the U.S. as a historian and critic of Italian literature. His research focuses on Renaissance and early modern literature and culture, and his two major areas of publication have been comedy (with an emphasis on the macaronic genre) and the relationship between literary creation and political power. He is particularly interested in issues of literary memory and genealogy, the relationship between “high” literature and popular culture, and the interplay of philology and criticism.
