Expert Bio
Andrew Bell is an assistant professor of international studies at Indiana University and a visiting research fellow at the Centre for U.S. Politics at University College London. His research interests include international security, international law, the law of armed conflict, urban warfare, humanitarian intervention and ethics in war. Bell has served in the U.S. Air Force with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, including service with U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan.
He has advised organizations including the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the U.S. Institute of Peace, Center for Civilians in Conflict and Human Rights First. His analysis has been published in venues including the Journal of Peace Research, Security Studies, Parameters, Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, The Hill and Newsweek.
Bell earned a Ph.D. in political science from Duke University, a J.D.-M.A. from the University of Virginia School of Law and an MTS from Duke Divinity School. He has held fellowships with the Institute of Security and Conflict Studies at George Washington University, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
