Expert Bio

Brian Joseph Gilley is a professor in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Anthropology. He is an expert in issues related to LGBTQ Native Americans as well as same-sex marriage. Gilley has also conducted research and consulting for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on issues related to infectious disease, particularly HIV/AIDS.

Gilley’s current research examines the relationship between food heritage and the environment in Southern Italy, with a specific focus on the Bay of Naples. He has also conducted research on migration to Italy by refugees as well as historical research on Italian colonialism.
