Associate professor Irene Garcia Newton is a microbiologist in the Department of Biology at Indiana University Bloomington, where she conducts research on host-microbe interactions. She studies the intracellular symbiont Wolbachia and how this bacterium colonizes insects.
She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society for Microbiology, and she serves as editor for the journals Environmental Microbiology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, and the International Society for Microbial Ecology Journal.
