Maurer School of Law Stewart Fellows spending the summer in nine countries

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Maurer School of Law has selected 23 students for its 2017 Stewart Fellows Overseas Externship Program. The fellows are spending the summer working around the globe, from Argentina to Vietnam, as part of a unique program offered through the school's Milt and Judi Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession.

The fellows have the opportunity to work in a variety of international settings, including corporations, nongovernmental organizations and respected law firms. This year's 23 fellows make up the largest class in the program's history. And for the first time, students have the opportunity to live and work in Cambodia, adding one more option to an already extensive program.

The program is named in honor of Milton Stewart, who graduated from the law school in 1971. He and his wife, Judi, congratulated the students on their appointments via a Skype session in the spring.

Professor Jayanth Krishnan, director of the Milt and Judi Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession, said this year's class brings the total number of students who have participated in the program to almost 125. He thanked the Stewarts for their loyalty to the law school and their commitment to educating the next generation of lawyers interested in globalization.

"We are so proud of our 2017 Stewart Fellows, because this year they set a landmark," Krishnan said. "We have crossed 120, in terms of the number of students we have sent abroad for our summer internship program. While we started with just a handful of terrific students in India and China back in 2010, we have expanded to nine countries, including the key emerging market of Cambodia this summer. Our students have so many wonderful supporters, including, notably, the Stewarts, and we are grateful to everyone who has helped make this program successful."
