IU Bloomington awards Emerging Areas of Research grants
The Emerging Areas of Research program, created as part of the Bicentennial Strategic Plan for Indiana University Bloomington, is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Vice Provost for Research to invest in key areas of research and creative strength on the IU Bloomington campus. This year's competition resulted in 21 proposals representing nearly 250 faculty at IU Bloomington.
Here are the research initiatives selected to receive 2018 Emerging Areas of Research awards from IU Bloomington:
- James Farmer, a faculty member in the School of Public Health-Bloomington, along with co-leaders Eduardo Brondizio, Analena Bruce, Daniel Knudsen, Jennifer Robinson and Peter Todd, as well as other collaborators, will receive $2.5 million to lead the "Sustainable Food Systems Science" initiative.
- Gerardo Ortiz, a professor of physics in the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Physics, along with co-leaders David Baxter, Alexander Gumennik, Roger Pynn, Phil Richerme, Amr Sabry, William Michael Snow and Shixiong Zhang, as well as other collaborators, will receive $3 million for the "Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering" initiative.
Annual State of the Campus address set for March 6
IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel will present the annual State of the Campus address at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, at Presidents Hall in Franklin Hall.
A reception with light refreshments will follow the address.

IU African American Dance Company presents 20th annual dance workshop
The IU African American Dance Company will present its 20th Annual Dance Workshop on Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, in the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.
Since 1998, the workshop has featured master dance artists and musicians who expose the IU and Bloomington community to diverse African-American and African diaspora dance traditions. From Afro-Cuban and West African dance to salsa and vogue, dance classes are offered to all movers regardless of dance experience or background.
This year's dance workshop will also feature the following events:
- A panel discussion with the guest artists titled “Black Dance as Global Dance” at 2 p.m. March 23 in Neal-Marshall Room A201
- A Late Night Bantaba, an African diasporic dance and drumming celebration, at 9 p.m. March 23 in Neal-Marshall Grand Hall, taught by African American Dance Company director Stafford C. Berry Jr. and founding director Iris Rosa.
- The 20th Annual Dance Showcase at 6 p.m. March 24 in the Neal-Marshall Grand Hall.
Class registration is available through the African American Arts Institute website. The full registration fee is $120 for Friday and Saturday for ages 12 and older. The cost for Saturday only is $70, Friday only is $45, and single class are $25. On-site registration will also be available in the Bridgwaters Lounge at Neal-Marshall on both days. IU named top producer for Fulbright U.S. Student and Fulbright Scholars programs
Indiana University is one of 16 U.S. institutions to be a named a top producer for both the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and Fulbright Scholars Program.
Twenty-one IU Bloomington students received Fulbright awards for academic year 2017-18 -- ranking IU 10th in the nation and second among public colleges and universities -- as announced by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The lists of top-producing institutions appeared in the Feb. 18 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
IU Bloomington students will compete in third annual Cheng Wu Innovation Challenge
Seventeen IU Bloomington students will compete to win $15,000 in scholarships when they pitch their technological innovations to a panel of judges during the third annual Cheng Wu Innovation Challenge on April 11.
The challenge supports students who are learning to develop technological innovations that are unconstrained by any immediate consideration of the commercial potential.
Applications due for sustainability fellowship, grant
The Office of Sustainability is accepting applications for a fellowship and grants. They are:
- The Student Sustainability Council will award $20,000 from IU's Sustainability Fund to projects that will bring measurable improvements to campus. Teams must create a project proposal and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org by midnight March 5. Students, faculty and staff are invited to apply.
- The Sustainability Course Development Fellowship awards up to $8,000 paid as a faculty fellowship for a project completed this summer. Applications are due at 5 p.m. March 9.
- The Sustainability Research Development Grant awards up to $3,000 for undergraduate and $10,000 for graduate research for a project that engages two of the three dimensions of sustainability: social, ecological and economic. It can also include scholarship or fellowship funding for individual students. Applications are due at 5 p.m. March 9.
IU Distinguished Faculty Research Lecture focuses on warming of Arctic climate
Jeffrey White, a professor of environmental science in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and professor of Earth and atmospheric sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences, will talk about his research experiences and findings from his work on the Arctic tundra in the 2018 Distinguished Faculty Research Lecture from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, at IU Cinema, 1213 E. Seventh St.
White is also founding director of IU Bloomington's Integrated Program in the Environment. The program integrates educational and research activities in environmental sciences and sustainability studies across the campus, involving more than 100 faculty, 25 departments and five schools.
The Distinguished Faculty Research Lecture series is co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President at IU Bloomington. Begun in 1980, this annual event recognizes the research achievements of an IU Bloomington faculty member and is accompanied by a $5,000 award to support the distinguished lecturer's continuing research. Past awardees include Elinor Ostrom, Richard DiMarchi, Brian Powell and Linda B. Smith.
Attend IU Center for Rural Engagement kickoff
IU staff and faculty are invited to attend the kickoff event for the IU Center for Rural Engagement, which works in collaboration with local communities and regional partners to address challenges and opportunities in 11 neighboring counties of southwest central Indiana.
The event will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. March 5 at West Baden Springs Hotel in West Baden Springs, Indiana. Those who are planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP online.
IU signs resolution agreement with Office for Civil Rights
IU has signed a voluntary resolution agreement with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, completing a comprehensive review of IU Bloomington's compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendment Acts of 1972. The law prohibits all forms of sexual-based discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual assault.
In addition to the completion of the Title IX comprehensive review, the Office for Civil Rights also issued conclusions of "no finding" in four individual complaint cases that had been filed while the review was underway.
The Office for Civil Rights acknowledges in the agreement the substantial work done at IU Bloomington before and during the multiyear review. IU Bloomington agrees in the resolution to continue these efforts and to rigorously pursue strategic initiatives aimed at meaningful and effective education, prevention and training, and policies and procedures.
