BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has signed a voluntary resolution agreement with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, completing a comprehensive review of IU Bloomington's compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendment Acts of 1972. The law prohibits all forms of sexual-based discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual assault.
In addition to the completion of the Title IX comprehensive review, the Office for Civil Rights also issued conclusions of "no finding" in four individual complaint cases that had been filed while the review was underway.
The Office for Civil Rights acknowledges in the agreement the substantial work done at IU Bloomington before and during the multiyear review. IU Bloomington agrees in the resolution to continue these efforts and to rigorously pursue strategic initiatives aimed at meaningful and effective education, prevention and training, and policies and procedures.
"While this action resolves OCR's audit, it does not end IU Bloomington's commitment or obligations to our students, faculty and staff," said IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel. "We take this issue very seriously and will continue to provide rigorous education and training as we work to create a safe campus environment."
Since 2014, the Office for Civil Rights reviewed more than 450 case files at IU Bloomington covering the timeframe from 2011 to 2015 and conducted student focus groups and individual student and employee interviews. Indiana University received and responded to six formal requests for information, addressing IU's policies and procedures, as well as response, education and training efforts.
In fall 2014, IU Bloomington conducted the IU Bloomington Community Attitudes and Experiences with Sexual Assault Survey to collect data that has been used to inform sexual violence prevention and response efforts. The comprehensive website stopsexualviolence.iu.edu launched that same semester, providing complete access to informational materials, reports and tools for reporting incidents.
