“I am getting a sense of the larger issues confronting the campus on a number of levels.”

“I am feeling more confident in my role as a leader and in seeking additional growth opportunities.”

“It helps me think of strategies to lead my unit through change.”

These are comments made by members of the IUPUI Next Generation 2.0 leadership program while attending the nine-month development program intended to prepare them to step into and/or create leadership opportunities in their units and schools.

Next Generation 2.0 supports midcareer faculty and professional staff at IUPUI who are women and/or members of underrepresented populations and are interested in seeking leadership opportunities at IUPUI or professional development to enhance their current role. The program was developed to address the need for a more diverse pool of leadership talent at IUPUI in the ranks of midlevel and upper administration.

Program participants will engage with subject matter experts drawn from IUPUI, IU and national academic institutions to learn about topics such as the contemporary higher education environment, planning and leading change, managing strategic resources, diversity and cultural competency, higher education finance, conflict management and negotiation, and ethical leadership. Participants will also identify, plan and implement a capstone project, either individually or in a group, that responds to an identified need of their department, the IUPUI campus or the Indianapolis community.

Applications for the fourth cohort can now be made online. Selected participants should expect to attend a two-hour orientation session in May 2018 and attend the on-campus program from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. one Friday per month between September 2018 and May 2019. Fees for the institute are paid by the participant’s unit, with a match from the Office of Academic Affairs.

The project was conceived by Karen E. Bravo, professor of law and associate dean for graduate studies and international affairs, and Gina Sanchez Gibau, assistant vice chancellor for faculty diversity. It builds upon and expands an IUPUI leadership program that took place in 2009, Next Generation @ IUPUI. Kathleen Grove, director of the IUPUI Office for Women, joined the team as a co-leader and consultant to assist in the implementation of the program.

The deadline for applications is March 18. Applications will be reviewed by the advisory board and announced the week of April 30.

Kathleen Grove is the director of the IUPUI Office for Women.
