“David Hamburg was one of Indiana University’s most remarkable and renowned alumni and one of the most distinguished academics our university has ever produced,” McRobbie said. “He was a recognized authority in the area of psychological stress and its effects on human behavior, and he presided over several of our country’s most prestigious scientific organizations, including the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine). He also dedicated much of his life and career to philanthropy and public service, working to improve the health and well-being of children and to end violent conflict around the globe. In recognition of these efforts and his extraordinary academic accomplishments, he received our nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (from President Bill Clinton).

“All of us at IU are deeply saddened by the passing of this great scholar, scientist and public servant, whose achievements reflect the very best of our university, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”
