New certificate equips health care providers with business knowhow to improve patient care

Apr 10, 2019

A new graduate certificate at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business on IUPUI’s campus provides business training to health care providers so they can both manage and improve patient care. The program begins in the fall.

The Graduate Certificate in Medical Management is a 12-month program that gives nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, anesthesiology assistants, pharmacists, medical technicians and other front-line, non-physician health care professionals the business acumen and skills needed to lead a health care organization and to implement changes that improve patient care and outcomes.

A new Kelley School of Business certificate will equip nurses and other front-line non-physician health care professionals with business skills needed to manage and improve patient care.

“We know many health care providers are asked to take on managerial roles, and they don’t feel they’re adequately armed to do the best they can,” said M. Kim Saxton, clinical professor of marketing and faculty director for the program at the Kelley School. “The Graduate Certificate in Medical Management trains health care professionals to manage teams, to understand how to negotiate, to create collaborative environments, and to feel competent and empowered as administrators to address major challenges facing health care.

“These providers want to understand the business side of health care, but they don’t feel they have the tools, knowledge or language.”

“Research shows that the U.S. bills more per capita for health care than any other country, yet we are not healthier than other countries. In fact, our life expectancy is declining,” Saxton said. “Kelley’s new graduate certificate will give caregivers the tools to look at the broader scope of health care and question: How can we make this better? How can we make health care more efficient – with better outcomes and lower costs?”

In the program, health care professionals will learn from Kelley faculty with years of experience researching and teaching on the intersection of health care and business.

The 15-credit graduate certificate can be completed in one year through online work and biweekly in-class evening sessions that are similar to clinicals. Credits earned in the Graduate Certificate in Medical Management can also be carried into the top-ranked, 24-month Kelley Evening MBA Program.

The Graduate Certificate in Medical Management rounds out the health care offerings from the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. Other offerings include the Business of Medicine Physician MBA for mid-career physicians, a joint MD/MBA with the IU School of Medicine for students currently pursuing an MD and a Scholarly Concentration for IU School of Medicine students.
