Wasitis begins chairmanship of AAU Council on Federal Relations

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Doug Wasitis, assistant vice president for federal relations at Indiana University, has begun serving as chair of the Association of American Universities Council on Federal Relations.

As part of a two-year leadership term, Wasitis served as incoming chair of the council last year. As chair, he will oversee the council's efforts to assist in developing and implementing the federal relations agenda of the AAU, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that was founded in 1900 and includes America's 65 leading research universities.

Wasitis, who is affiliated with IU's Office of the Vice President for Government Relations and Economic Engagement, has led the university's federal relations efforts for more than 15 years and has served as IU assistant vice president since 2013. An IU alumnus and former Capitol Hill staff member, he works regularly with members of Congress, the White House and federal agencies on issues of importance to IU and higher education, such as federal appropriations, education and research policy, regulatory and compliance, health care and medical education, and international engagement.

"I am a true believer in the power of education to lift people up," Wasitis said. "Working with my AAU colleagues, I look forward to the next year and addressing the key challenges and opportunities facing higher education and its many partners."

"Indiana University is especially proud to have Doug serving in this role, because it reflects so positively on our institution as well as the esteem to which he is held by his colleagues and counterparts within the AAU," said Bill Stephan, IU vice president for government relations and economic engagement.

The Council on Federal Relations helps AAU monitor and shape legislation and policy for higher education, science and innovation at the federal level. Its members regularly engage with members of Congress and federal agency officials.
