Each February, we celebrate Black History Month, a time to honor the incredible accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history.
IUPUI’s Multicultural Center and Black Student Union are hosting multiple events to celebrate the month, including movie screenings and discussions on social justice.
Feb. 3: Black History Month Movie Night
IUPUI’s Campus Center Theater will be showing “All In: The Fight for Democracy” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3. The documentary focuses on voting barriers in history and current activism against voter suppression.
Feb. 8: Understanding health disparities in the Black community
Join the Black Student Union in bringing awareness to the many health disparities impacting the Black community. The group is holding a discussion at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, in Taylor Hall Room 2110 to talk about the issues and ways we combat the problem in our community.
Feb. 9: The Tunnel of Oppression
With a focus on social justice, students can view a recorded version of the “Tunnel of Oppression” that IUPUI hosted in November. It is an emotionally immersive experience where participants will be challenged to give up their preconceived notions and take action to prevent and end oppression. The showing will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, in Taylor Hall Room 104.
Feb. 18: Afro Fit class
Afro Fit is an Afrocentric dance workout that combines muscle toning and cardio dance. The Black Student Union is holding a session from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Campus Center Room 309. No experience is needed, so come out and have fun!
Feb. 23: ‘Young, Gifted and Black’
The discussion series, “Young, Gifted and Black,” continues with a look at violence. This year’s theme is “Black Violence: Between Us, Against Us, By Us … What are we going to do about it?” Be part of the discussion at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in Taylor Hall Room 101.
