Indiana University 2018 Year in Review

    Celebrating diversity

    IU Bloomington

    The Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs celebrated its 20th anniversary fostering diversity and inclusivity at IU. Other anniversaries among its programs and cultural centers included 20 years of the Asian Culture Center, 45 years of La Casa, 50 years of the Groups Scholars Program and 30 years of the Hudson & Holland Scholars Program.

    Protector of the planet

    IU Bloomington

    IU Bloomington astrobiologist Lisa Pratt was named planetary protection officer at NASA. Hailing from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, professor Pratt is responsible for protecting the earth from potential contamination by extraterrestrial life forms, such as microscopic threats originating from other planets.

    A culture of service

    IU Bloomington

    As a network that helps connect students with service-related opportunities, IU Corps was launched to build a culture of service at IU Bloomington. From one-time volunteer activities to years of intensively focused service or research, IU Corps makes opportunities for community engagement more visible and facilitates partnerships in the community.

    Fostering innovation

    Indiana University

    IU launched the $15 million Philanthropic Venture Fund to be a catalyst for economic development in the state, as well as entrepreneurship throughout IU's campuses and regional academic centers. The fund invests in faculty, student, staff and alumni startup companies to further develop their research and innovations.

    Helping Hoosiers

    IU Bloomington

    IU Bloomington improved the lives of Hoosiers throughout southwest central Indiana with a $10 million grant establishing the Center for Rural Engagement. Including faculty-led classes and multidisciplinary research projects, IU faculty, staff and students participated in center initiatives to address community-identified opportunities and needs.

    IU Bloomington women's basketball hung a new banner in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall as Women's National Invitation Tournament champions. The win was celebrated alongside an all-time winningest senior class with the two best players in program history, Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill.

    A hub of innovation

    IU Bloomington

    A new state-of-the-art building was dedicated for the School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering in Bloomington. The 124,000-square-foot Luddy Hall was unveiled during LuddyFest, featuring a massive work of "sentient art" in its glass atrium.

    First Goldwater Scholar

    IU South Bend

    Phillip Marmorino made history as the first Goldwater Scholar from Indiana University South Bend. The 16-year-old junior is one of 211 Goldwater Scholars in the nation this year and one of only seven named in Indiana.

    IU Southeast awarded over 900 degrees at its 50th commencement ceremony. IU Southeast has awarded nearly 35,000 degrees over the past half century since its founding in 1941.

    The Books and Beyond program sent more than just books to Rwanda this year; it sent a 3D printer, an optometrist, and a cohort of students, staff and faculty with the goal of building possibilities for the people of Musanze.

    A newly renamed Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies was awarded $18.8 million in funding for 11 international centers, supporting multiple area studies and languages that cover almost every part of the world.

    IUPUC hosted Exito Latino, a one-day event bringing in 180 area Latino students to discuss barriers they face completing high school and attending college. The event provided students with a roadmap for pursuing their goals after high school.

    A building for design

    A new home for the School of Art, Architecture + Design's J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program was established in the former Republic Newspaper building in Columbus, Indiana. The first classes in the new building started in the fall.

    The single largest grant

    Indiana University

    The university received its largest single NIH grant of $44.7 million to fund research on a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Led by the IU School of Medicine, the five-year study will search for new therapies for the disease that have up until now resisted treatment.

    A new gathering place

    IU Kokomo

    A new student activities and events center at IU Kokomo was approved and scheduled for completion by 2020. The new 23,500-square-foot gathering space will serve as a central venue for Cougar athletic events and other student community
